GeoMedia has the pleasure to invite you to the webinar:

How does access and benefit-sharing (ABS) contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

Description :

It is widely recognised that, without effective measures to conserve biodiversity and use its components in a sustainable manner, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will not be achievable. Much less discussed is how efforts to further the third objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) – the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the utilization of genetic resources - contribute to the implementation of the SDGs.   This webinar will present positive impacts and lessons learned from a range of practical experiences with ABS and highlight the way in which ABS advances sustainable development. The event is organised by GeoMedia, the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) and the Institute for Biodiversity Network, in collaboration with the CBD Secretariat, and is based on the outcomes of a research project supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN).   The project features a selection of ABS cases from different regions of the world, covering benefit-sharing approaches related to commercial research and development and supply chains and also to scientific research on genetic resources. This webinar will be an opportunity to get an overview of these cases and to discover lessons learned, as well as emerging good practices presented and discussed by first hand actors.  It will also be an opportunity to find out more about the different ways in which ABS is contributing to the implementation of the SDGs.

An overview of the cases featured in the research project can be found on the ABS Clearing House  here.  The final compendium containing ABS cases as well as an analysis of findings regarding lessons learned, good practices and the contribution of ABS to the SDGs will be launched at the webinar.
